Silver Armada Dishes are often used as prizes or trophies for sporting events or for commemorating long service or a special achievement.
The term Armada Dish comes from the idea that the first set of dishes were made from silver captured from Spanish ships in the 16th Century, only to be lost (or buried during the Civil War) by their owner, the wealthy Sir Christopher Harris. The silver dishes were rediscovered by farmers in 1827 and returned to the descendants of Sir Thomas who later gave them to the British Museum where they remain to this day.
In those days silver dishes such as these would have been used to serve food by the aristocracy, where they would upturn one dish over another to keep food warm.
Due to the high silver content we usually make these dishes to order in our workshops, but can respond quickly to orders and we engrave in house to further aid special delivery requests.
